Moderator Doug Roof

I was born and raised in Ohio where I met Karen in high school and where we were married, over 50 years ago. My formal education includes an electrical engineering degree and a masters in business administration.

Because I went to work for a large American company right out of college, we moved around a bit. Our first spot after we both finished college was Nashville, TN; then Roanoke, VA; then Monroe, LA; then Dallas, TX; then Pleasanton, CA; then back to Roanoke, then to Simsbury, CT, then Wilmington, DE. We managed to raise three children along the way and, when two of them landed in Hood River, we relocated here (in 2016).

My parents introduced me and my two siblings to church at a young age. We became members of and grew up in a Church of the Brethren. Karen was often in a Methodist Church on Sundays and, after our marriage and while we were moving around, we occasionally attended Methodist Churches. When we landed in Delaware, we stayed for almost thee decades, and we were active members of a progressive Methodist Church during that period.

Upon arriving in Hood River, we visited four different churches and decided that Riverside Community Church suited us best. This church truly welcomes all, and the congregation puts into action the teaching that we are to love our neighbors. Riverside is a member of the United Church of Christ denomination, and one of our tenets holds that “God is still speaking…” We believe it. And we do our best to listen.

Moderator Elect  – Beth Hartwell

Beth has been attending Riverside for 10 years. She is an active member of the Kitchen Team as well as the Music & Arts Board.

She enjoys hiking and paddling, and relaxing in the winter with textiles, and the summer in her garden. 

 

 

 

Secretary Ann Becker

Ann has been a member since 2017 and served as a diaconate and occasional reader during worship service. She serves as a trained OWL program facilitator and is a valuable asset to Riverside and its Council. In her spare time she helps with her grandchildren who live in SE Portland ages 9 and 7 and enjoys exploring rivers and camping with her husband and walking dogs. She’s done a bit of pickle ball and LOVES to read!

 

Treasurer – Tom Rietmann  

Tom and his wife Katie Cook joined Riverside in 2019.  Previously they were members of the United Church of Christ in Condon where they operate a ranch. Tom sings bass in the RCC chancel choir, has been a member of the Cheers team and serves on the Finance & Development Board and the Building Use & Maintenance Committee.
